The author introduces the concept of masking as a strategy used by some people on the autism spectrum to adapt to the neurotypical world. In his book, he describes how people with autism spectrum disorder learn to mask and the effects that hiding autistic traits has on their mental health. Based on social science research as well as his own experiences and self-experience exercises that accompany the entire book, the author guides the reader to find ways to show the world the real self.
